Mooring your boat at the jetty: here's how it works

You want to secure your boat to the jetty? There are various ways to do this, such as using cleats, eye shackles, cleats or anchor trees. You need someone on the jetty during a manoeuvre to attach the line to the mooring line and cleat. If you have no one ashore, a crew member must jump ashore, ideally in the middle of the boat.

The boat is then moored to the berth with three lines: a fastener line and two stern lines. You should only reach for the appropriate line when it is safe to do so. The line should not be too short, otherwise the swell and sinking water level will be an endurance test for mooring lines and cleats.

If the boat cannot move, the ropes will be strained too much and may even break. Therefore, when leaving the boat, you should loosen the lines enough to compensate for fluctuations in the water level. In addition, you should not attach the mooring line at the very top of the pile end, but at deck level when the water level is normal.

To prevent the eye of the mooring line from slipping into the water, it should be secured to one of the upper hooks. A knot on the jetty with a spare line is best. Accordingly, the mooring line can be modified both ashore and on board. Ideally, run the mooring line as directly as possible from the cleat to shore. Chafing points should be avoided or foreseeable vulnerable points should be protected with a rag or hose.
