The various technical adaptations made to this engine have turned the Cléon factory into a genuine technological laboratory. In , the lower valve cover gasket and valve train, initially made from cork, started to be made from silicone, which then required new techniques to remove the seals. The layout also evolved for the Renault 9 and 11, from the initial longitudinal mounting and simultaneous assembly with the gear box and starter, the &#;Cléon fonte&#; engine moved to a transversal mounting, considerably reducing the noise inside the vehicle. This transition led to the replacement of the hydraulic timing chain tensioner with a mechanical tensioning device, thereby improving the engine&#;s performance and durability. The C-type engine was one of the first to adopt electronic ignition, the turbocharger and injection system. Its success can be quantified by its impressive production figures &#; over 14 million C-type engines were built at Cléon!

aftermarket parts & myths debunked

so i was having a discussion in work today regarding renault OE timing products. with companies like valeo etc making renaults waterpumps and timing belts + a few others ..... what are peoples fears in using non OE timing products? do you realise that valeo make the exact same product, and renault buy it and re-box it to allow them to charge a premium for it .... yet if you buy the same part for half price from your local motor factors, it's somehow deemed as being junk ... not to be recommended .... so on so forth! absolute madness guys.

i've always noticed that a lot of people get scaremongered easily into believing that aftermarket engine parts are somehow junk by mechanics who are ignorant to the facts. valeo for example, over the entire renault range from to make up a good large chunk of the parts in a renault engine. so if your waterpump was made by X but you want to put in a cheaper OE spec valeo pump instead, or opt for the equivelant motor factor timing belt made by valeo or companies like them then why don't people realise that most of these companies make engine parts and timing belts for other big automotive companies?

fram (arnold clark and halfords favourite) - ford original equipment suppliers. . . you get the point of where this is going here really.

i used a valeo waterpump (aftermarket) on my GT timing belt last year plus aftermarket tensioners and pulleys + auxbelt. met original equipment specifications and knowing that it was made by valeo, and other companies filled me with confidence.... i am not saying opt for unbranded cheap ebay crap here!

one good example was with black-twingo-i (mike) who asked me to get him a price on an OE clio 197 map sensor which came in at over 100 quid. even with trade discount and a back order, it was a kick in the nuts. i managed to track him down a few aftermarket options and in the end opted for quinton hazell (or however you spell it) who make sensors for a few huge automotive companies as the OEM manufacturer. i bet you any money that this part will outlast the life of the engine itself unlike the original renault part which on a 197 was a common premature failure point....OE parts just do not cut the mustard sometimes.

with the dephaser, i'd always opt for original renault though. but i want to know, because i am curious ..... what horror stories have you heard about aftermarket parts? and how much of it do you think is true?
