Advantages of Capacitive Touch Screen | disadvantages of Capacitive Touch Screen

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Capacitive Touch Screen. It mentions benefits or advantages of Capacitive Touch Screen and drawbacks or disadvantages of Capacitive Touch Screen.

Introduction:
A touch screen is video display with embedded touch sensors. The screen is used as pointing device like mouse and trackpad. Touch screen reports position as well as pressure. Touch screens are widely used in smartphones, tablets, photocopiers and laptops. Two major versions used widely are resistive touch screen and capacitive touch screen.

What is Capacitive Touch Screen?

Introduction:
It consists of two spaced layers of glass. These layers are coated with conductor e.g. Indium Tin Oxide. Human body acts as an electrical charge conductor. When user touches finger to the glass of capacitive surface, it changes electro-static field. The system monitors the position where exactly the finger has been touched on the screen based on movement of each tiny capacitor.

Capacitive touch screen can also consists of an array of single touch sensors printed on a glass panel as vertical and horizontal lines of transparent conductive ink. Alternatively, a small capacitive screen can measure the tiny amount of current drained by a fingertip from four sources located at corners of the touch screen.

Benefits or advantages of Capacitive Touch Screen

Following are the benefits or advantages of Capacitive Touch Screen:
➨It uses glass layer and hence looks sharper and brighter.
➨It is highly sensitive and hence does not require stylus.
➨It supports multi-touch.
➨It offers high clarity and resolution.
➨Completely sealable.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of Capacitive Touch Screen

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Capacitive Touch Screen:
➨It works based on conductive nature of human beings and hence does not work when user wears gloves.
➨It is expensive compare to resistive touch screen.
➨Glass is more prone to breaking and hence requires tempered glass as touch screen protector.
