My house has a 2-phase supply, with dual-rates (night and day). I’m guessing that no-one will make a Smart Meter for 2-phase supplies. Does anyone know if a 3-phase Smart Meter (when available) will be able to be fitted (and hence cope with one phase never being used)?

View originalEnergy metering is the measurement and monitoring of energy consumption. The purpose of energy metering is to manage energy savings and ensure the availability of energy supplies. An energy meter is a device designed to measure energy consumption. This article will describe single-phase and three-phase energy meters, their applications, and compare their accuracy, reliability, and cost considerations.
Applications of Single-Phase Energy Meters
Single phase energy meters are suitable for energy management in residential and small commercial establishments. They are used to measure electricity consumption by consumers to determine bills and energy consumption. Portable and easy to install, single-phase meters are affordable and the first choice for many small businesses and homes. Single-phase electricity meters play a vital role in energy management, energy saving and cost control.
Applications of Three-Phase Energy Meters

Three-phase energy meters are suitable for energy management in large commercial and industrial sites. They are used to measure the energy consumed by high-power equipment. Three-phase electricity meters are highly accurate to ensure the accuracy of electricity consumption by consumers. Three-phase electricity meters can be used to monitor the current, voltage and power factor of the power network to optimize the quality of the power network.
Comparison of Accuracy and Reliability of Single-Phase and Three-Phase Energy Meters
Single-phase meters usually have low accuracy and stability, but are relatively cheap. The three-phase meter has high precision and high stability, and the price is more expensive. Also, single-phase meters are generally considered suitable for small businesses and homes, while three-phase meters are used in industrial and commercial locations because of their generally higher power draw.
Cost Considerations for Single-Phase and Three-Phase Energy Meters
As mentioned earlier, single-phase meters are suitable for small businesses and homes, and three-phase meters are suitable for large commercial and industrial establishments. Therefore, the price of single-phase meters is lower, while the price of three-phase meters is higher. When selecting energy metering equipment, it is necessary to consider its use environment, purpose and cost factors.
Conclusion on the Suitability of Single-Phase and Three-Phase Energy Meters
To sum up, single phase meters are suitable for residential and small businesses, are inexpensive and easy to install. Three-phase meters, on the other hand, are suitable for large commercial and industrial sites, and are expensive and accurate. Therefore, the selection of suitable energy metering equipment needs to consider factors such as its use environment and budget.
