Telescopic Fishing Rod Stuck – Fishing At Work

07 Feb.,2024

If you have ever had a telescopic fishing rod get stuck, then you know how frustrating it can be. It can be difficult to separate two or more sections of a fishing rod, especially if they are stuck together like glue. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips that can help you fix your telescopic fishing rod quickly and easily!

How Do You Fix A Jammed Fishing Pole?

If you have ever telescopic fishing rod get stuck when you try to extend it, you know how frustrating it can be. This can even happen with fly fishing rods if you leave them together for too long. You see this a lot with people who have a lot of fishing rods stored somewhere for a long time and then when it comes time to use them, they are stuck like glue.

So, how do you fix a jammed fishing pole?

The first thing you need to do is identify where the problem is. If the rod is just stiff and won't extend or retract, it's probably just dirt and debris in the telescoping sections. You can try cleaning it out with compressed air or a small brush.

If the telescoping sections are stuck together and won't come apart, you may need to use a little force. Try holding the rod at the base and twisting the telescoping sections in opposite directions.

You may also need to tap them lightly with a hammer to get them started. If that doesn't work, you may need to cut the rod apart and start over.

Once you get the telescoping sections working again, be sure to clean them thoroughly before using the rod. This will help prevent the problem from happening again in the future.

How Do You Free A Stuck Pole Section?

Just like the section above stated you have options of cleaning, twisting, hammering, and cutting to get it unjammed. Well, you can skip the cutting part since I don't know anybody that would cut a fishing rod and remake it from scratch.

With that said, what else is left for you to do? Well, there is one more option that works for many things in the winter.

You can add hot water to that section of the rod. It will clean out debris and it will make the rod expand. If it is 99 degrees Fahrenheit outside that might already be doing it. Then you can put it in some ice cold water to make that area shrink rapidly. That should make it free up just about every time.

There is one problem with this solution. Rapid heating and cooling may cause the rod to crack...

Carbon Fishing Rod Stuck Together

You will have to be very careful when it comes to carbon fiber fishing rods. Carbon fiber is flexible and strong when you keep the area of flex to a minimum. However, when you do a lot of twisting or sudden heavy shots in the direction the thread of the carbon isn't the strongest it will shatter!

I guess this is one reason not to be using too much carbon. Maybe a lighter rod makes your wrist feel better so you can fish longer, but you are always making a sacrifice somewhere else.

How Do You Unstick A 2-Piece Fishing Rod?

This is just the same as above. Whether you have a 2-piece fishing pole or a 100-piece fishing rod it is the same option for all. You may be a little more gentle when it has more sections.

Do All Fishing Rods Come Apart

The only real difference is telescoping fishing poles don't come apart and multi-piece fishing rods do. I believe that fishing that separate is easier to get unstuck because you don't have to worry about completely breaking your rod.

With a telescoping fishing rod, it will hit the stopper at the end of the section and you have to know you are at that point.

Lubricating Fishing Rod Joints

One thing that many people don't think about is using some kind of lubricant. it will get it moving. Something even better is "Penetrating Lubricant". It's crazy strong and toxic to inhale. It is generally used to clean out huge bolt inserts that have gotten rusty.

Whats In Your Tackle Box

I recently used some to clean up the rust in the trailer hitch bolt holes of my SUV. I had to use that and a tap to clean out the threads. At first, I couldn't even get the tap started. After the penetrating spray was in there for just 30 minutes I was as good as gold.

The first thing you need to do is get some lubricant. This can be WD-40, silicone spray, or even just cooking oil. Whatever you have lying around the house will probably work just fine. Just make sure it's something that won't damage the finish on your telescopic fishing rod.

Fly Reel Stuck On Rod

having a reel stuck in your rod is a bit of a different thing than having the joints of a fishing rod stuck together. This generally happens because of rust between the metal of the reel and a tightening screw of some sort.

The best course of action is to use a bit of oil and let that set in for 30 minutes to an hour. Then you are going to use a little bit of elbow grease to work it loose.

The reason we don't want to work it loose when it is dry is for a couple of reasons:

  • The reel may break (I have seen that before)
  • Rod may break
  • The tightening screw may break
  • Oil will get on your fly line and make it unusable

What Do You Do With A Broken Fishing Rod?

If your fishing rod is broken there is honestly not much you can do unless you are a professional rod builder or you know one.

You will have to have a pretty good reason to want to fix your rod:

  • It's a custom rod and you want to use it forever
  • It's a really expensive rod, but you don't have a lifetime warranty
  • You are a rod builder and you have all the tools already
  • You know a rod builder that can do it for a decent cost
  • It seems like an easy fix and you think duct tape will fix it

If you are that last one then you should just put the fishing rod in the trash now and save yourself the trouble.

Is It Worth Repairing A Broken Rod?

No, not really. Even if it's just the tip you will have to replace an entire section which isn't cheap.

The best thing to do is just get a new telescopic fishing rod or a new multi-piece fishing rod. You can find some decent ones for under $100 and they will last you quite a while.

How Much Does It Cost To Repair A Fishing Rod?

It really depends on the severity of the break and where it is. If you have a broken tip then you are looking at replacing an entire section which could cost anywhere from $20-$40. You can find special kits to help you do this since the tips of many anglers' rods break off frequently.

If you have a more serious break then you may be looking at getting a new telescopic fishing rod or multi-piece fishing rod altogether.
