slate raven vs standard touch screen?

I have a 27" touch screen (Acer T272HL) and use it with a Mac (with Touch-Base drivers) and Windows 8 PC. There's no way I would want to control PT or any other DAW with it full time. Most DAW controls are too small to accurately hit them with your finger and after a while it can get really frustrating (for me anyway).

Try this as a test.. Put your mouse pointer on your screen somewhere visible. See how small the tip of the mouse pointer is? Now put your finger over it and see how much bigger of an area your finger covers. You can calibrate the touch response, but hitting small controls (that are expecting the tip of a mouse pointer) is still hit and miss. You'll end up trying several times to hit the same control and sometimes will trigger unintended things.

IMO you really need a dedicated software application like Slate's Raven. All of the buttons/controls are bigger than the tip of your finger, which makes them very easy to use. It sounds like there are stand alone touch screen DAW controller applications in the works, which is great, and at some point I think that DAW's will natively support touch. I do own Sonar X2, which I run in Windows 8, but they just basically tacked on multi-touch support to the standard GUI and it's not a great experience (again, IMO). To really support touch all of the controls of the DAW will have to be much larger, so that not only can you touch them without issues, but it's nice when you can actually see a little of the control while your finger is touching it.

All that said, there are a lot of plugins that have large GUI controls and work really well with a touch screen right now, and that's what I'm using mine for. I have a large 24 channel control surface that I use for basic DAW control (volume, pan, mute, solo, sends, groups). For whatever track is selected, the plugins come up on the touch screen and I can control them very quickly. I find that it's a lot more engaging and fun than using a mouse.
