General Steel is a perfect example of what PugetDude is talking about. The business was run out of a bedroom for years but all the radio ads made it sound legitimate. There are lots of brokers out there peddling buildings. I generally warn against brokers but I have dealt with a couple of good ones by way of erecting buildings purchased by owners.
Tube steel buildings have changed the landscape. These buildings are getting more sophisticated every day. Companies like Eagle, Dreams, Carolina Carports and many more use a dealer network but it works a bit differently. When the dealer places your order and takes your 10% deposit that is his commission. He is done with the sale and everything going forward is run by the parent company. A lot of times the dealers don’t prepare the customer for what to expect when the installers show up and without going into a long story that is why most of these companies have horrible reviews on the internet.
Now we all know that angry and unhappy customers post the most reviews so that needs to be taken into account. I’ve done quite a few buildings and have very happy customers. I think that for smaller buildings this is the future.
Now cold formed buildings have made their way to America and I think there is a strong future for them. I believe that red iron will mostly be serving the commercial market. I’ve said it before and here it is again. Try to do business with a local supplier that can come to your building site and give you the best service. Internet pricing isn’t always the best deal. In my local market I can usually meet or beat internet prices.
It’s hard to say who is the “best” company to purchase from. It comes down to who may be the closest to you. Freight costs money and the less time on the road will make the building less expensive. More importantly the people you deal with will make the biggest difference.
